People behind the initiative of Critical Technical Practice

I am a Computer Science Ph.D. Candidate at the Medical Image Analysis Lab, Simon Fraser University. I am supervised by Prof. Ghassan Hamarneh. My research focuses on explainable AI for medical image analysis.

In my research, I found that despite the fact that explainability is one of the five AI ethics principles, the use of the common evaluation criterion of explainable AI —- plausibility —- can mislead and manipulate users. If the sentinel field of ethical AI has such a serious problem, how we can be sure that other technical fields do not have similar problems? Why does a technical field for ethical purposes end up in unethical outcomes? From this counterintuitive phenomenon, I began to explore the root causes. And critical technical practice is the systematic approach I want to explore to intervene in the roots.
